Description
Kennedy John John F. Kennedy Signed Photo from Boston College Centennial; He & Ted Appear in Academic Robes!

A vintage black and white photograph of 35th U.S. President John F. Kennedy (1917-1963), fully engrossed and signed by him as "For John Volmer (?) - / with esteem and warm personal / regards from his friend, / John Kennedy". Ca. April 20, 1963. Handsomely presented and matted and framed behind glass. Not examined out of the frame. The photo surface shows minor superficial rippling consistent with age. Minor wear to the frame. The sight size of the photograph is 9.25" x 6.125" while the overall size of the frame is 12.625" x 10.625".

The presentation inscription and signature are a little watery, but the photo subject and date, April 1963, more than compensate. It is also unusual for this pair of Kennedy brothers--John and Ted--to have been photographed together.

The photograph shows JFK at center, flanked by younger brother Edward Kennedy (1932-2009) at right and the Very Reverend Michael P. Walsh (1912-1982), President of Boston College, at left. President Kennedy attended convocation ceremonies marking the 100th anniversary of Boston College on April 20, 1963. JFK spoke for about 10 minutes before an audience of approximately 20,000 people assembled in Alumni Stadium on BC's Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts campus. Both Kennedy brothers are shown wearing full academic regalia. JFK had been granted an honorary degree from Boston College in 1956, when he also delivered the commencement speech, as a junior Senator from Massachusetts. Ted Kennedy would receive an honorary law degree from Boston College in 1966.

JFK's speech at the convocation, though short, was heralded as noteworthy. This was because JFK, as the first elected Catholic President, addressed students and academics from one of the nation's premier Catholic institutions of higher learning. JFK visited Boston College six times during his three years in the White House.

Michael P. Walsh served as the 22nd President of Boston College between 1958-1968, during an era of renovation, expansion, and modernization.

A photo of the same event taken by JFK White House photographer Cecil W. Stoughton (1920-2008), is appended at the end of this description. This is among 14 images from the collection of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum (ST-C107-2-63).
