Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Signed Crowborough Edition Complete Works
A signed 24-volume set of the complete works of British writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930), The Crowborough Edition (Garden City, New York: Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., 1930). Number 193 of 750 numbered sets reserved for sale. The limitation page of the first volume, Rodney Stone, is signed by the author as "A.C. Doyle" at bottom. The volumes are uniformly bound in publisher's half cloth and light brown paper-covered boards, with the front covers featuring Doyle's facsimile signature in gilt, and the top textblock also gilt. With the original dust jackets. Each volume is discretely stamped "Library of Congregation Emanu-el" and numbered 15,886-15,909 on the front loose endpaper. Deckled pages. Expected wear to the dust jackets, including chipped edges, uneven fading or discoloration, and isolated loss. Volume 21 is missing the front cover of its book jacket. Else near fine. 8vo.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is best remembered for creating Sherlock Holmes, an urbane non-professional detective who solves crimes while meditatively playing the violin. Yet this massive limited edition collection testifies to the breadth of Doyle's literary output. He wrote many other works outside of the Holmesian canon, including short stories, ghost stories, plays, poetry, and historical romances.
