From the foreword: “There has always been something sui generis in the American comic spirit, though I don’t know that it has ever been recognizable defined. A touch of brutality perhaps? anger rather than humor? Various words rise to the mind-sardonic; extravagant; macabre-we reject each one, yet the mere fact that it suggests itself points to some essential hardness or sharpness of spirit. It is curious that from the very beginning there is something in these drawings that is characteristic of Yankee temper.â€
Condition / Notes: This antique set shows well, with some typical indications of age and wear, including shelfwear and rubbing. The bindings and text blocks are firm. Text and illustrations remain clear and legible through mild to moderate uniform age toning.
