Author: Charles E. Goodspeed - Charles E. Goodspeed was the founder of several bookstores in Boston and a dealer in rare books and manuscripts. Most of his writings were bibliographical, compiling A Treasury of Fishing Stories and Nathaniel Hawthorne and the Museum of the Salem East India Marine Society, or, The Gathering of a Virtuoso's Collection. His autobiography, Yankee bookseller, published in 1937, gives a full picture of booksellers, collectors, and authors of his time.

Book Details: This antique volume is bound in blue cloth with brown and gilt titles to the spine and front cover. The original pictorial dust jacket is preserved and present. An illustrated frontispiece and numerous other illustrations enhance the text. A signed inscription by the author to Clayton L. Travers appears on a front endpaper. Letters in reference to this title, written by Benjamin Ticknor to Clayton L. Traver and Charles Goodspeed to Clayton L. Traver are laid in.

Now he has written an autobiography filled with the legends, anecdotes, and odd characters of this fascinating bypath of literature, and giving invaluable information on the collection and marketing of rare books and prints. Mr. Goodspeed treats such subjects as book collectors and book dealers, rare early American prints, odd and curious books, book-buying celebrities, ‘points’ of first editions, appraisals of famous collections, the romantic story of Poe’s Tamerlane, autographs, forgeries, auction sales, and the author’s recreations. The many illustrations include rare prints, portraits of collectors, facsimiles of forgeries, views, autographs, title-pages and book-plates, and unpublished portraits.â€
Condition / Notes: This antique title displays some typical indications of age and wear, including shelfwear and mild rubbing. The binding and text block are sound. Text and illustrations remain clear and legible through uniform age toning. The endpapers show moderate age toning. The original dust jacket displays chipping, tears, and rubbing, with the front flap detached.
