Description
This lot consists of a graphite drawing on paper, done in the realist style of Edward Hopper (American, 1882-1967). Hand inscription at bottom right reads, "E. Hopper". This modern image depicts a man standing in dramatic light, as if waiting for a lover or a bus. This modern art image is done in the realist style for which Hopper is so well known. A simple framing would make this piece a highlight to any collection. Unframed piece measures approximately 8.5" x 6.75".
Reverse side features a stamp which features the phrases, "New York, NY" and "1957".
Hopper, used to water views from childhood, was raised in a home on the Hudson River. He showed early artistic talent. Following two years of illustration work at the turn of the 20th century, Hopper became a student at the New York School of Art under William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. Hopper credited the latter as being his most influential teacher. In his urban and rural studies, Edward Hopper's spare and finely calculated compositions reflected his personal vision of modern American life and have become instantly identifiable to art lovers everywhere.
