Description
This lot consists of an acrylic painting on stretched canvas. Done in the free-form abstract style of Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960-1988). Rich with narrative imagery and explosions of color, the viewer quickly becomes absorbed in the artist's sweeping, expressive strokes. A testament to the vibrancy and raw talent associated with the elusive 20th century painter, Jean-Michel Basquiat. Several three-pointed crowns adorn the piece, along with "Samo" and "Jean Michel Basquiat" at lower right. A striking highlight to any collection. Overall, this unframed piece measures approximately 20" x 16".
Reverse side of canvas reveals still more art, as if one side was not nearly enough. The back is covered in small images, words like "LIBERTY" and "ASBESTOS", and, of course, a crown with three points. Not to be overlooked, a small handwritten inscription at lower right reads, "Jean Michel Basquiat".
Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960-1988) was an influential New York artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. Basquiat first achieved fame as part of SAMO, an informal graffiti duo who wrote enigmatic epigrams in the cultural hotbed of Manhattan's Lower East Side. It was here, during the late 1970s, that rap, punk, and street art coalesced into early hip-hop culture. By the 1980s, Basquiat's neo-expressionist paintings were being exhibited in galleries and museums internationally.
