Description
ARNOLD BORISOVICH LAKHOVSKY (RUSSIAN 1880-1937), "Jewish Peddlers at the Sukharevka (Sukharev Tower Flea Market)," 1911, oil on canvas, 56 x 32 cm (22 x 12 5/8 in.), signed and dated lower right. PROVENANCE: Sotheby's, New York, April 23, 2004, lot 53, as "At the Flea Market"; Private Collection, New York (acquired by the present owner at the above auction). The historical Sukharev Tower, built in Moscow in 1692-95 by order of Peter the Great, was demolished in 1934 under the Soviet authorities by order of Lazar Kaganovich. Lenin is remarked to have said about the flea market which existed around the tower since the 19th century, that it was a "breeding ground of speculation." In this painting, Lakhovsky masterfully aptures the figures and atmosphere of the market with great attention to detail and sense of surrounding.
