Description
North America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely chest of a rectangular form built from multiple slats of hardwood. The exterior is painted with a coat of jet-black paint and the embellished with intricately painted natural scenes in hues of crimson, cream, forest-green, aqua, turquoise, citrine, and cobalt-blue. The front of the chest is decorated with a scene showing two red-roofed buildings set near a flowing stream, next to a brick-and-mortar foot bridge, and among a grouping of six tall trees. The sides of the chest bear a matching building flanked with two trees, and the top of the lid as well as verso of the body are unadorned. Painted 'jeweled' decorations accentuate the rim of the lid as well as vertical columns on either side of the painted scenes, and the lid articulates via a petite iron handle. Condition
Original iron lock plate missing, with corresponding chips to inside of lid and inside of body. Nicks and abrasions to base, body, and lid, with chipping and fading to original pigmentation, a few stable fissures, and areas of staining inside of body. Great remains of original pigment throughout.
