Native American/First Nations, northern Canada, Inuit, ca. 1920s or later CE, signed by "Okhena". A handsome mottled grey and grey-green soapstone carving of a seal, its body elongated and widened into a nearly flat shape with tiny front legs and a broad tail. The head is smooth aside from incised eyes, nostril, and line-shaped mouth. A simple sculpture utilizing the natural banding in the stone. Incised on the underside is "Okhena"; otherwise the piece is highly polished. Size: 6.3" W x 1.45" H (16 cm x 3.7 cm)
