Indonesia, western Irian Jaya/West Papua, Asmat people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A long gourd sheath, its surface colored with earthy red and black pigment, and its narrow end cut open to allow a dagger to slide within. The dagger is made of the huge thigh bone of a cassowary bird. The joint of the bone (or head of the dagger) is decorated with a woven (macrame) textile adorned by feathers. Blades like this one traditionally have been used by Asmat headhunters. Size of gourd sheath: 2.25" W x 13" H (5.7 cm x 33 cm)

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985
