John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich ALS Dating from 3rd Term as First Lord of the Admiralty, before or after Inventing the Sandwich?

2pp autograph letter signed by John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792) as "Sandwich" at the top of the second page. Written at the Admiralty on August 12, 1771. Inscribed overall in Montagu's hand on watermarked cream bifold paper. An early autograph collector has added a biographical note on the third page; the fourth page is blank. Expected wear including light paper folds and overall toning. The paper hinge has been reinforced and is a little fragile with a closed tear at top. Else very good to near fine. The text is dark and legible. 7.125" x 9.125".

The 4th Earl of Sandwich, then in his third and last term as First Lord of the British Admiralty, wrote this letter to an unknown individual who was undoubtedly a fellow aristocrat.

In full:

"Dear Sir

You may be assured that I shall consider Captain Jacob as a person who will be entitled to every civility in my power, in consequence of his being under your protection; but he is now in a situation that will not allow me to be of use to him for some time; as his ship is coming home to be paid off, he having served his three years, which is, in time of Peace, the term allowed for a rotation of service among the commission officers & which is never broke into upon any consideration.

I am with great truth & regard

Your most obedient & most humble servant

Sandwich

Admiralty

August 12, 1771".

A handwritten note appearing at the bottom of the third page provides a brief biography of John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich: "John 4th Earl of Sandwich, Minister to Aixe la Chapelle previous to the Treaty of 1748 A Secretary of State and First Lord of the Admiralty 1748 to 1782. He was distinguished for his convivial talents and his passion for music Was the author of a 'Voyage to the Mediterranean' Born 1718. Died 1792."

The 4th Earl of Sandwich served three non-consecutive terms as First Lord of the British Admiralty between 1748-1782, including his last which coincided with the British response to the American Revolution. Despite his 30+ years of government service, though, he is probably more commonly known for lending his name to that ubiquitous lunch staple, the sandwich. There are various accounts of why Montagu invented the modern day sandwich, which, in the eighteenth century, he ate as a slab of salt beef between two pieces of toast. Montagu's detractors maintain that he favored the sandwich because it enabled him to stay longer at the gaming tables; his proponents because he could work uninterruptedly at his desk. The long-term results of the sandwich: a $25 billion industry in 2019!
