Description
Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612), "Exquisita & magno aliquot mensium periculo lustrata et iam retecta Freti Magellanici Facies: eijgentlicke asbeeldinghe der Magellanischer Strate die nu met veel gevaers eitelijeke Maenden doorsien van nieus ondecktis," Amsterdam, ca. 1611. This hand colored map of the Straits of Magellan and Tierra del Fuego originates from the Mercator-Hondius Atlas.
This map has a number of interesting features. North is at the bottom of the map, as indicated by the elaborate compass rose pointing downwards. Tierra del Fuego fades up into unknown territory, as this map predates European exploration of Cape Horn. One of the three elaborate cartouches depicts a profile of the entrance to the straits. Illustrations of ships and animals, including a nursing seal or sea lion.
