Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Aztec empire, ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. A wonderful bichrome terracotta incensario of a clever design comprised of an olla shaped receptacle bifurcated by a slight recess at the midline, this bowl-like form decorated with openwork triangular motifs, and tastefully slip painted - the upper half in black and the lower half in red. The censor is supported by two tubular legs and a longer handle with a protruding bird-like form lying upon it. In the Pre-Columbian world, birds as sky animals were believed to serve as messengers between humankind and their deities. Size: 8.625" L x 4.625" H (21.9 cm x 11.7 cm); olla-shaped receptacle is 3.875" in diameter (9.8 cm)
