Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Oaxaca, Mitla Ruins, Mixtec culture, ca. 1200 to 1521 CE. An intriguing stylized face amulet carved from a fragment of mottled beige-hued stone with grey inclusions. The head is presented in profile with slit-form eyes, a petite chin beneath a string-cut mouth, and a pointed nose, all below a rounded forehead. A large suspension hole is biconically-drilled through the middle of the cheeks. Size: 0.9" W x 1.125" H (2.3 cm x 2.9 cm).
Provenance: ex-Elbert H. Hastings collection, Kansas City, Missouri, USA, acquired through J.G. Brecklein in the 1950s; according to the current owner, the piece was excavated in 1894.
