Description
1895 John Sherman Civil War Senate Reconstruction Tecumseh Racism Law Biography
John Sherman was the State Senator of Michigan, brother of Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman, and the author of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act of 1890. His book ‘John Sherman’s Recollections’ is of his period in Congress, covering the pre-Civil War, Civil War era, and Reconstruction.
Eicher states,
“This is a highly valuable and often neglected source on the politics of wartime Washington. The work contains many excerpts of speeches and other official documents of the Ohio Senator, a staunch Republican and the younger brother of Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman. The narrative offers much of value relating to the political circles of the Civil War Senate. The most valuable aspects relate to financial matters and the senator’s deep involvement in military affairs, emancipation measures, and such key legislation as the Legal Tender Act, the national banking system, and the Federal income tax, all cleverly and vigorously supported by Sherman’s basically conservative agenda. More than one-qarter of the first volume treats the war years. Although much of the narrative linking speeches and documents recalls events of 30 years earlier, the work seems steadfastly reliable. Many facsimiles of letters and official documents appear, as do photographs of significant players in the political and military machines of the Federal war effort. A large store of material covers Sherman’s significant postwar activities, consuming much of the first volume and the entire second volume. The discussion of Sherman’s role in Reconstruction will interest all students of that tragic period.” (Eicher)
