Description
Two handles trophy cup with Arts & Crafts style silver overlay in geometric pattern, engraved on front, "Phila. Swimming Club/220 YD Open Handycap/Presented By/W.H. Edwards/Aug. 15, 1925/Won By/Hugh McGaffery/Notre Dame." Marked on base, "Silvercrest Sterling Decorated Bronze." 6 1/4" high. McGaffery attended Penn Military College where he excelled at sports and made the U.S. Olympic swim team. Got his law degree from Notre Dame and jointed the Army Air Corp in 1930. He was considered an excellent pilot, and was part of the 1st Air Force unit appointed by Sect, of War Stimson to investigate the lack of preparidness at Pearl Harbor. Unfortunately on Dec. 12, 1941 while piloting a Douglass B-18 in route to Hamilton Field in Calif., his plane disappeared in a snow storm in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. His body and the wreckage were not recovered until May, 1942, under five feet of snow. Condition Fine.
