Jehan Georges Vibert (French, 1840 - 1902)
During his long and prolific career, Vibert was recognized as one of France's most accomplished academic painters. His sense of drama permitted him to write plays and poke fun at Bishops, Archbishops, and Cardinals of the Catholic Church in France enjoying the good life of the second half of the nineteenth century. Vibert debuted his work at the Salon of 1863 and continued to submit to these important exhibitions until 1899. As the popularity of his work spread, notably in America, he obtained high prices including commissions from important collectors like John Jacob Astor IV and W. H. Vanderbilt.
