Item Details
Description
This lot consists of a watercolor and gouache illustration on paper, done in the romantic Hudson River School style of Thomas Moran (American, 1837-1926). A handwritten inscription in lower right corner reads, "Moran. 1897." Image depicts a shimmering water scene. Several small boats cluster in a placid port. Light shimmers on the waters. Expertly executed, this warm piece would make a fine addition to any collection. This framed piece measures approximately 23.5" x 30", with an approximate image sight of 6" x 12.25".

Reverse side of piece features an affixed paper label which reads, "Santa Fe Art Auction. Thomas Moran (1837-1926). Untitled (Venetian Harbor), 1897. Watercolor and gouache on paper. 6 x 12 1/4 inches. Signed and dated lower right: MORAN / 1897. Lot 17-222."

Thomas Moran (American, 1837-1926) was a distinguished colorist, editorial illustrator, and painter of Western landscapes. Thomas Moran was the first American painter to capture the majesty of the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone, which helped lead to the establishment of these two National Parks. Moran met Scottish-born Philadelphia transplant Mary Nimmo in 1863. Nimmo was Moran's neighbor, and was herself a talented printmaker and etcher. Nimmo and Moran were married in 1865 and went on to have three children. Extraordinarily prolific, both as an etcher and a painter, Thomas Moran continued to work well into his eighties. At his death in August 1926, he was memorialized as the "Dean of American Landscape Painters."
