Description
This lot consists of an acrylic painting on board, done in the abstract expressionist style of Hans Hofmann (German-American, 1880-1966). A hand-painted inscription at lower right corner reads "Hans Hofmann". This framed piece measures approximately 26" x 22.5"; with an approximate image sight of 20" x 16".
Reverse side of piece features a multitude of hand-painted inscriptions, including "Hans Hofmann / Provincetown Mass / Sing Song 1951", "Robert Richenburg", "Jo Plaskett", "Red Grooms", and a number of illegible and/or purely symbolic epigraphs. Richenburg, Plaskett and Grooms were all students of Hans Hoffman in Provincetown Massachusetts.
Hans Hofmann (German-American, 1880-1966) is regarded as one of the most forward-thinking artists of the 20th century. He is dually remembered for his influence as an art teacher and a painter. Hofmann's dynamic artwork is characterized by its rigorous concern with unity and pictorial structure, as well as bold color and spatial illusionism. His energetic, "push and pull" compositions, full of movement and depth, can be found at most major American museums and in galleries across the world.
