Description
This lot consists of an oil painting on canvas, done in the Tonalist style of Charles Harold Davis (American, 1856-1933). A handwritten inscription at lower right corner reads, "C.H. Davis". This framed piece measures approximately 14.5" x 16.5" overall, with an approximate image sight of 7.25" x 9.25".
This soft and curious image depicts the pale blush of an early morning (or a late evening) sky. Below, a distinct sense of quietude hovers over a hazy little grove, where house and barn nestle into the foliage that surrounds. A handsome addition to any collection.
Reverse side of painting features an affixed paper label bearing the name of Hirshberg, Hollander, & Co., purveyors of "artists materials" and "drawing supplies" in Baltimore, Maryland.
Charles Harold Davis (1856-1933) was an American landscape painter and Tonalist master. He painted exquisite, sumptuous landscapes with both poise and sensitivity. Davis paintings are marked an otherworldly sense of light and air. Davis' later work featured more inventive handling of cloud forms, hillsides, and old pastures. From 1910 on, Davis became veritably famous for his cloud paintings, in which he depicted billowing cumulus formations and all the infinite abstractions to be found therein.
