Ferdinand Ossendowski’s The Fire of Desert Folk is the account of a journey through Morocco in 1924. English text is by Lewis Stanton Palen. Published 1926 by E. P. Dutton & Company (first edition). There seems to be some confusion as to what, exactly, constitutes a Dutton first edition, which I will here lay to rest. From E. P. Dutton’s own 1928 statement in “First Editions of Today and How to Tell Them” by H. S. Boutell: “…we have no definite scheme for identifying First Editions. Recently a copyright notice behind a title page, on which nothing occurs but that, is an indication it is a first, because when we begin the second printing we mark it on the back.” Morocco is here vividly described as the land of the fiery Moors, of mysticism, of old, historic cities, of undaunted zeal for freedom and independence. The author also analyzes with deep insight the political and religious situation which is of international interest. Professor Ossendowski reveals external Morocco--the country in all its gorgeous oriental coloring. He then unveils the inner life--the harems, the mosques, the Moorish family customs. A brilliant picture of Morocco and its fiery people. Clean, tightly bound book. Tips worn through at very ends, else very good plus.
