Books in this auction are from a dealer who is winding down his book business, so reserve prices on many of the books are drastically reduced. The sale includes an eclectic selection of collectible and scarce vintage books and ephemera. Most of the booklets and other ephemera included in this auction are from the 2008 estate of an Ohio couple who were longtime collectors. The sale includes many scarce and unusual pieces which have never been put on the market. Books in this sale range from the 17th century to the mid-20th century. Included in the auction are a grouping of items associated with George Sisler, one of the all-time great major league baseball players. Of special note is the nearly complete 1906 Frank Snyder Architectural Details large format book and other scarce architectural books; an extremely scarce 1785 Robinson Crusoe (one of only forty books printed using logography); a scarce copy of The Chickasaw Nation with tipped-in signed letter by the author; a rare 1738 third edition of Gulliver’s Travels; an 1818 edition of The Navigator by Zadok Cramer and a scarce limited edition of H. G. Wells’ “Door in the Wall,” (with 10 photogravures…the most desirable version). Finally, the sale includes two items that really belong in museums. The first is a collection of over 600 handwritten one-off letters by Henry Dorn that form the basis of the pre-birth of the American Federation of Labor. This is a unique item that chronicles the genesis of the first industry safety inspections in Ohio which eventually led to the founding of the AFL in Columbus. The other item is an 1840 hand-woven coverlet by Daniel Bury of New Portage, Ohio. The Chicago Museum of Art has a similar example in their collections.
