Jon Thorleifsson (Icelandic, 1891 -1961): Icelandic Mountain. Oil on canvas, signed lower right, framed with plaque designating this painting as a gift to Thordur Stefansson (a landscape painter of his own right).
Jon Thorleifsson studied art in Copenhagen. Many of his works are expressionist in style. He was influence by Cezanne, but nevertheless embraced a range of styles depending on his subject. His paintings of the Siglufjorour herring industry, including Fisherwomen, are well known. Fisherwomen is a large work, which was shown at the World Fair in New York 1939-40 now decorates the lobby of the Icelandic Parliament.
