Inscribed and signed by the author on the front pastedown in the year of publication: "Dr. A. Cooke Hule, with regards of the author - Henry Ward Beecher. March 12, 1868." Henry Ward Beecher was an American Congregationalist clergyman, social reformer, and speaker, known for his support of the abolition of slavery, his emphasis on God's love, and his 1875 adultery trial. He was the brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe.
