Superbly illustrated work on Indonesia by the son the novelist Frederick Marryat. Frank Marryat sailed as a midshipman with Edward Belcher on a surveying expedition to the archipelago, 1843-1846, and Hill notes that "interesting information is given in this book on Singapore, Macao, and the Philippines in addition to Indonesia." The younger Marryat also authored Mountains and Molehills, an esteemed work on the California gold rush, which was published in 1855, the year of his death at age 29. Hill, 1st ed, p.489; Hill, 2nd ed., 1088. This copy with prize bookplate The Royal Navy School, awarded for Classics and French, signed by the headmaster Thr. Chambers, dated 1848.
