Description
Village Scene. Oil on board. Signed, dated and inscribed 'Espiritu Manila November 5 1898' lower right. Sight measures 13.5 in. high x 9.5 in. wide, (with frame 16.25 in. high x 12.25 in. wide).
As a painter and sculptor Anselmo Espiritu is considered to be the most important artists of the Espiritu family. His training took place at the Practical School of Arts and Crafts in Manila, likely studying under Vicente Gallegos. He participated in the Regional Exhibition of the Philippines of 1895 and at the St. Louis Exposition in Missouri. His works can be found in important collections of the Philippines including the Pagrel Collection and in Spain. His paintings are an important visual testimony of the rural Filipino world.
