Autumn Trees and a Lake in the Distance. Oil on canvas board. Signed lower right. Sight measures 11.5 in. high x 15.5 in wide, (with frame 17.25 in. high x 21.5 in. wide).
Joseph Birren was born in Chicago in 1864. He attended Art Institute of Chicago where he was a student of John Vanderpoel. He also studied in Philadelphia, New York at the Art Students League, Munich, and Paris at the Académie Julian. A landscape painter, illustrator and graphic artist, Birren was known for a style called Tactilism, meaning he used paint in a way that gave the illusion of three-dimensional work.
