J. Andre Smith (1880-1959) was born in Hong Kong and was the son of a sea captain. The family moved to Hamburg Germany, then to Boston, Massachusetts before settling in New York in 1893. He was a noted etcher by 1911 and was the first official war artist from America during WWI arriving in France on March 15, 1918. He was widely published and collected after WWI in the US and Europe. In 1938 he opened a studio in Maitland Florida, it is still open today it is called the Maitland Art Center. His etchings are in almost every major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.

Condition: Very good condition, no tears, one printing crease right margin to image edge and some minor discoloration around old hinges.
