Description
1875 Russia Trip Up the Volga Fair of Nijni-Novgorod Turkey Voyage Illustrated

“Trip up the Volga’ was written by Henry Munro-Butler-Johnstone, a member of parliament for Canterbury, with his focus on foreign affairs.

"He was an ardent imperialist and … became a leading Russophobe and Philo-Turk. He resigned his parliamentary seat in 1878 in order to visit Turkey but later came to despair of the nation" (ODNB).

‘Trip up the Volga’ is a book based upon a series of letters first published in the Daily News, giving an account of Henry’s travels on board the steamer Alexander II from Astrakhan to Nizhnii Novgorod in the Summer of 1874, describing his trip through ‘the most interesting portion of the Russian Empire.’

“Due attention is given to the German colonies around Saratov, the koumiss-cure establishments near Samara, and the attractions of Kazan, but it is the annual fair at Nizhnii that is described in particular and interesting detail" (Cross).

This undated 19th century edition is illustrated with 12 full page black and white plates!
