Henry Maxwell’s ‘Anguis in Herba’ or ‘The Fatal Consequences of a Treaty with France’ is an important early 18th-century account of the Spanish War of Succession. Written in 1702, Maxwell’s treatise sought to describe the concerns that would arise between France and Spain following any treaties signed between the two countries. He argues that any agreements made would greatly benefit France, adding to France’s already powerful diplomatic influence.
