Description
1833 / 1953 1ed Alta CALIFORNIA Mexico Spanish Law San Francisco Guzman
A short but valuable tract on the change of control over missions and Spanish settlements in Alta California, Mexico. Collected and edited by Jose Maria Guzman, this ‘brief notice’ helped clarify the Mexican secularization act of 1833 which caused a significant rift between the governing bodies, settlers, and local Mexican people. While the contents of this pamphlet were not the direct cause, the events described would eventually lead to the Mexican-American War and the disputes over national borders.
The included folding chart is a statistical table covering the population and crop statistics of Alta, California in 1833 – note the stated population of San Francisco: 371 people and 5,610 cows!
