Description
Hirschfeld Al
"Apollo Chorine" Signed and Numbered Limited Edition Color Lithograph from "Harlem as seen by Hirschfeld"
Lithograph Signed "Hirschfeld 6/50" in pencil. Color, 9" x 12". "Apollo Chorine" Limited Edition signed and numbered by the artist. One of the illustrations from Hirschfeld's Harlem as seen by Hirschfeld, text by William Saroyan, published December 7, 1941. This is one of the high-quality lithographs created to be part of a set of the plates in portfolio. Light damp stain to upper right corner, trivial stain to right edge, neither effecting the image - else fine.
Many of the Hirschfeld images in Harlem have become iconic representations of the African-American experience in the 1930s and are considered by many to be the artist's best work. Just before he died at age 99 in 2003, Hirschfeld wrote: "I have lived almost my whole life on the outskirts of Harlem … Harlem was as familiar and as accessible to me as the blocks around your house are to you, or the fields around your homestead, or the ice floes around your igloo." He had the entire set of his Harlem lithographs framed on the hallway wall leading to his studio.
This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
