Self Portrait Oil Painting attributed to the great English portraitist Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA FRS FRSA (16 July 1723 – 23 February 1792) | Oil on Canvas | Attached to the lower center of frame is a brass plate stating "Self Portrait Sir Joshua Reynolds 1723 - 1792" and written on verso "Joshua Reynolds" on upper stretcher bar, and "Cathy & Bobby Gregory Coll. N.Y.C." on lower stretcher | Housed in the original gold gilded gesso wood frame | Approx. Dimensions: Framed 34.75” H x 30” W x 2.25” D; w/o Frame: 30” H x 25” W.Provenance: Provenance Report From Owner: From Sir Joshua Reynolds personal collection to a prominent British collection. Shipped to Ireland for safe-keeping during World War 2. Unclaimed after the war, the painting was sold on or around 1952 to Cathy and Bobby Gregory of New York City, New York. Exhibited / displayed in New York gallery owned by Cathy and Bobby Gregory (c. 1955)(Located at 1695 Broadway, Apt. No. 1, 2nd Floor, New York 19, N.Y. Next to CBS Theatre [Ed Sullivan Theater], 53rd & Broadway. Phone Columbus 5-0093) See attached sale catalogue - No. 13. A portion of the Gregory art collection was put up for sale in late 1950’s (prior to the Gregory’s moving to Nashville, TN), including the Self-portrait of Sir Joshua Reynolds (Item 13 in Art Sale Catalogue). The painting was not sold and traveled with Gregory to Nashville, Tennessee. Gregory moved to Nashville to be closer to the country music business, living initially on 17th Ave in what is now the Music Row area of Nashville, TN. The painting was later sold by Gregory’s estate (Belle Meade Nashville, Tennessee) in 1971 following Mr. Gregory’s death; acquired by the previous owner, a prominent country / western song writer of Franklin, TN. Then acquired from said owner in or around 2000 by current owner, a Nashville artist and songwriter. About Cathy and Bobby Gregory, New York & Nashville, TN. Bobby Gregory (April 24, 1900 - May 12, 1971) was a famed country/western singer and actor in the 1940’s and 50’s. He appeared in numerous western genre movies with Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, and others. Gregory's country / western band was named "Bobby Gregory And Cactus Cowboys." https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1473005/bio Songwriter, accordionist, composer, author and singer, a former cowboy, lumberjack, sailor, and circus and rodeo musician. He led the Cactus Cowboys band, and made many recordings. Joining ASCAP in 1940, his popular-song compositions include "Little Darlin'", "Am I Dreaming?", "Sunny Side of the Mountain", "Riding on the Old Ferris Wheel", "She's Only a Moonshiner's Daughter", "I'd Love to Be a Cowboy, but I'm Afraid of Cows", and "Ramblin' Hobo".Notes: Sir Joshua Reynolds PRA FRS FRSA (16 July 1723 – 23 February 1792) was an English painter, specializing in portraits. John Russell said he was one of the major European painters of the 18th century. He promoted the "Grand Style" in painting which depended on idealization of the imperfect. He was a founder and first president of the Royal Academy of Arts, and was knighted by King George III in 1769.
Condition
Canvas has been relined. Previous flaking to paint. Painting has just been sealed by Worthington's Restoration Department (engaged by owner). Additional restoration likely needed. Worthington performed no in-painting or other work.
