Edwards, Sydenham. THE BOTANICAL REGISTER: CONSISTING OF COLOURED FIGURES OF EXOTIC PLANTS. [and] EDWARDS'S BOTANICAL REGISTER… NEW SERIES. London, 1819-1839, and 1838-1847. All uniformly bound, 10" x 6". TOTAL OF 23 VOLUMES, CONTAINING 1,783 COLOR PLATES. The first set contains 15 volumes; includes volumes 5, 7-8, 10-12, 16-23, + Appendix volume; total of 1,234 color plates (including 115 folding.) The "New Series" set contains 8 (of 10) volumes, lacking only vols 4 and 5; contains a total of 549 color plates (including 27 folding.) No plates missing from any of the volumes. All plates numbered and with accompanying text leaves, indexes to each volume except for volume 10 of the new series. Handsomely bound in green 1/2 straight-grained morocco over cloth, floral gilt devices, a few light scuffs, spines faded, else showing very minimal use. Contents clean with occasional light foxing. In all, a Very Good and attractive partial set (complete sets very scarcely found.) Sold as collection of plates. Provenance: Pastedowns with armorial bookplates of Gerald Walter Erskine Loder. **************************** FIRST EDITION. Edwards "was a talented and enthusiastic artist. He obviously possessed knowledge of plant anatomy and... [his illustrations are] considered among the best scientific illustrations of the day" (ODNB.) He worked for Curtis's Botanical Magazine for 27 years before starting the Botanical Register as its rival.
