Description
This is a very rare old wood sculpture from the Dogon peoples of Mali, West Africa. A highly stylized ancestral effigy featuring a stylized ancestor with a well weathered and encrusted surface, suggesting many many layers of sacrificial matter poured onto the figure as offerings. This is the type of sculpture sometimes found in cave shrines with generations, sometimes centuries of offerings. The figure measures 15.5 inches tall. Mounted to a wooden base.
