Antique “The Derby” Cuff Holder or Card Cheating Device

Item Details

Description

This is an Antique “The Derby” cuff holder or holdout device for cheating at cards. Or it could be both, I am not sure. There is a spring clip on one end, and a horseshoe at the other. On the stem, one side reads "The Derby", on the other is Pat Nov. 29, 1898. It was silver in color but it has worn off leaving mostly brass behind. Clip is in very good working condition. I have found information that it was made by John C. Plicieer who applied for a patent in Nov. 4, 1898, and received it Nov. 29, 1898. I have tried to find a copy of the patent, so far no luck. Cuff holders were used on detachable cuffs, a shirt would be worn several times with the collars and cuffs replaced daily. Used for cards, it would be attached to the cuff, with a card slid into the prongs. Either way, it is a nice little piece of history. Total length 2 ¾ inches.
