Description
Elizabeth Quale O'Neill Verner (UNITED STATES / SOUTH CAROLINA, 1883 - 1979) fine pair original pastel works on wooden panel boards depicting a "Charleston Flower Vendor" woman holding a bouquet of flowers and smoking a cigarette; signed "E ON Verner" to lower left. Verso pencil inscribed "Anabel Robinson Charleston Flower Woman". Next is the portrait of a black man with coat and cane; signed "Verner" to lower right. Verso having a color pencil sketched landscape scene with a rural home. Each mounted in matching wooden frames behind glass screens. Portraits measure approx. 9 1/2" height x 7 1/2" width (24.1cm x 19cm) to sight. Measures approx. 13 7/8" height x 11 3/4" width (35.2cm x 29.8cm) overall including frame. Provenance: Acquired from a Boynton Beach, FL estate. *****Notes : Verner Is one of a cadre of artists that sparked the revival of Historic Charleston, South Carolina and the Charleston Renaissance and the Southern Renaissance. Her direct association with the following artists led to the rediscovery of Charleston as well as the beautiful Carolina Lowcountry; Artists include: Alice Ravenel Huger Smith , Alfred Heber Hutty , Edwin Harleston , Leila Waring , Ellen Day Hale, Gabrielle D. Clements, Anna Heyward Taylor . Verner studied at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under the direction of Thomas Anschutz. Verner began her Pastel paintings after a visit to Boston where she was inspired by the floral still life works of Laura Coombs Hills. Verner authored books including “ Prints and Impressions of Charleston “ and “ Other Places and Prints and Impressions of Charleston”. She was a member of the Carolina Art Association which is now the Gibbes Museum of Art , Charleston Sketch Club , The Art Association of New Orleans , Southern State’s Art League , Charleston Etcher’s Club, as well as other Northern art associations. Verner was also an active preservationist in Savanah , Georgia. Verner’s work is included in the collections of The Telfair Museum of Art ,The Metropolitan Museum of Art , The Museum of Fine Arts ( Boston) , High Museum ( Atlanta) as well as numerous private collections.
