Description
18th Century Baroque Portrait of a Gentleman | Oil on Relined Canvas | Depicts a gentleman from the royal / noble class in what appears to be formal 16th/17th century attire with a chain or clasp holding a pendant of a knight riding a horse and carrying a lance. The left shoulder of his cloak or robe contains a large armorial badge or coat of arms which seems to say “Hon. for honorableÂ…. and other writing. The subject is wearing a folded lace white collar, with the robe / cloak is red with black or dark blue trim. The subject is wearing a hat decorated with tasselÂ’s and feathers. | The canvas has been relined with newer H bars. The crossbar has Lot 92 or 192 crudely scratched on its back. There is a Harris and Sons Framing Label attached to the back of the lowest stretcher bar. Harris and Sons were frame makers from the 19th century (till the loss of their George Street office in March 1941 as a result of “enemy action” in World War 2). The same label has “Devon and Cornwall Galleries” with an address of both on George Street, in Plymouth, England. The label also states at its top a Frame No.F I 9, and the date of Sept. 30, 1913. The newer frame and relining would likely date to that time. The right stretcher bar has a black stenciled Identification, possibly from a Christies Auction | The weave of the original canvas shows it was hand loomed with wavy lines, and varied thickness. | Housed in a gold gilt gesso wood frame | Approx. Size 24” H x 18.5” W
