Apollo XIV
Alan Shepard, Stuart Roosa, and Edgar Mitchell Signed Apollo 14 Lunar Photo with American Flag, with Zarelli L.O.A.
A stunning photo of astronaut Edgar D. Mitchell, Apollo 14 lunar module pilot, standing by the deployed U.S. flag on the lunar surface during the early moments of the mission's first spacewalk. He was photographed by astronaut Alan B. Shepard Jr., mission commander. While astronauts Shepard and Mitchell descended in the Lunar Module "Antares" to explore the Fra Mauro region of the moon, astronaut Stuart A. Roosa, command module pilot, remained with the Command and Service Module "Kitty Hawk" in lunar orbit. Boldly SIGNED by all three astronauts on the mat below the photo as "Alan Shepard", "Stuart Roosa", and "Edgar Mitchell". Both the mat and the photo are in fine condition with one very faint handling mark. Photo size 14.25" x 11"; mat size 20" x 16". Accompanied by a Letter Of Authenticity for all three signatures by Steve Zarelli of Zarelli's Space Authentication. Superb presentation! From the collection of Elton Stepherson, one of the earliest African-American employees of NASA.
Apollo 14 was the eighth crewed mission in the United States Apollo program, the third to land on the Moon, and the first to land in the lunar highlands. It was the last of the "H missions," targeted landings with two-day stays on the Moon with two lunar EVAs, or moonwalks.
Mission Objective
The primary objectives of this mission were to explore the Fra Mauro region centered around deployment of the Apollo Lunar Surface Scientific Experiments Package, or ALSEP; lunar field geology investigations; collection of surface material samples for return to Earth; deployment of other scientific instruments not part of ALSEP; orbital science involving high-resolution photography of candidate future landing sites; photography of deep-space phenomena, such as zodiacal light and gegenschein; communications tests using S-band and VHF signals to determine reflective properties of the lunar surface; engineering and operational evaluation of hardware and techniques; tests to determine variations in S-band signals; and photography of surface details from 60 nautical miles in altitude.
