Description
Union Brigadier General John Gibbon Carte de Visite Signed "John Gibbon Brig. Genl. Vols." 2.5" x 4", with a J.E. McClees, Philadelphia imprint on verso. A portrait of the famed leader of the Union's "Iron Brigade". Gibbon is pictured wearing his uniform with a bowtie. Signed in black ink beneath the albumen on the mount. John Gibbon (1827-1896), a Pennsylvania native, had three brothers who fought for the Confederacy. His specialty was artillery and he authored the "Artillerist's Manual" in 1860. He was given command of a brigade composed of Indiana and Wisconsin regiments who wore distinctive hats and gaiters. Known initially as the "Black Hat Brigade", they later were known as the "Iron Brigade" after distinguishing themselves at South Mountain. Gibbon was wounded at Fredericksburg and Gettysburg. He later fought with Grant at Petersburg and was one of the commissioners who received the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee's army. From the Bret J. Formichi American Civil War Rarities Collection. Condition: Light soiling along the right edge, with minor toning throughout. Light wear to corners. There is a small amount of adhesive residue present at the top right corner on verso.
