ACCESSORIES General Sir John Grenfell Maxwell (July 11, 1859-Feb 21, 1929) was a colonial governor and British Army officer. He obtained the title of Captain and earned his first decorations during the Anglo-Egyptian War of 1882. He led the 2nd brigade in the Battle of Omdurman, after which he personally led the march on Khalifa, the Sudanese ruler's, palace. He was appointed Governor of both Nubia and Omdurman. Maxwell served in the Second Boer War (1899-1902), leading the march to Pretoria. His service in South Africa earned him the status of Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath and Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. During WWI, he was deployed on the Western Front. Maxwell is most renowned for his actions in the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland. Acting under Martial law, Maxwell arrested and sentenced civilians to death by trial without defense or jury, causing him to become the center of controversy. After the Easter Rising, Maxwell was assigned to be General Officer Commanding-in-Chief for Northern Command at York, then promoted to full general in 1919, where he remained until retirement in 1922.
