It essentially constitutes a defense of Southern generalship during the war, examining not only Lee but a wide spectrum of Confederate field commanders: Stonewall Jackson, Pierre Beauregard, Joe Johnston, Samuel Cooper, James Longstreet, Braxton Bragg, Richard S. Ewell, Jeb Stuart, A.P. Hill, John Bell Hood, Albert Sidney Johnston, Leonidas Polk, Sterling Price, Edmund Kirby Smith, John Hunt Morgan, William J. Hardee, and Wade Hampton III.
