Description
A rare photograph of Chaim Nachman Bialik [near the table] alongside Refugees. Constantinople 1921. In March 1921, Bialik left Odessa for Moscow, to work there for permission to enter Palestine for himself and for a group of writers and activists from Odessa. Moshe Klineman, the daughter of Shalom Aleichem and her husband, Dr. Michael Kaufman, accompanied him in Moscow, and stayed with the Zalkind family, relatives of Moshe Kleinman, and after the great efforts of Russian writer Maxim Gorky, he finally received the exit permit. In the summer of that year, he sailed with his wife from the port of Odessa on the cargo ship Urslan. The couple arrived in Constantinople and stayed there for a few weeks in the matter of 'Dvir'. This photo was taken during his stay in Constantinople. (From there he went through Berlin to the Twelfth Zionist Congress, which took place between the 25th and the 11th of Elul, 1921, in Karlsbad). Divided back for use as postcard. Very fine condition.
