Description
Important map, striking in its transitional representation. Fascinating glimpse of this region shortly following the outbreak of the Civil War. Shows the state of Oregon with much of its eastern regions not surveyed yet. Washington is depicted as a massive territory extending eastward as far as the Rocky Mountains where it bumps up against the Nebraska Territory. Nebraska occupies what will become Dakota, with Nebraska Territory stretching all the way to Canada and adjoining Washington Territory. Shows and names forts, location of Indian tribes, mountains, lakes, rivers, counties, towns, etc. In this map most of the western regions of Wash. Territory (what today includes parts of Idaho and Montana) are unexplored and dominated by various American Indian nations including the Snakes, Pa-nacks, Nez Perce and others. Shows Fremont’s 1843 route as well as suggested route for the Pacific Railroad as proposed by Governor Stevens. Notes geographical features such as the Tetons, Mt. Rainer, Mt. Adams, Fremont’s Peak and the Three Buttes. Excellent impression and vivid hand coloring. Published by Johnson and Ward. Sulfur spot at far left. Very small and faint spot just above western Washington. Pinhead spot in lower margin. 12.5 x 15.5
