Born in Tilburg 1899 Died in The Hague 1979 Jacques Mels was a self taught artist. At young age he went to Curacao, where he became teacher at a trades school. Back in the Netherlands, he worked in Amsterdam, the Hague and Limburg. His work include many cityscapes, still lifes and portraits that he created in his own, almost expressionistic style. Mels painted much Brabant and South-Limburg landscapes in which cloud skies were an important subject. Especially with the water color technique, he made beautiful landscapes at which the use of many black and unusual colors grants an extra drama.
