Description
A well executed oil on canvas, portrait of Captain Robert Chestnut who settled in New Brunswick in the 1830s after many years at sea. Captain Chestnut holds a parallel rule and calipers in his hands as he looks over a map marked "Bay of Fundy" which is also seen through the window over his left shoulder. Chestnut had a successful merchant career and was the founder of the Chestnut Hardware and Chestnut Canoe Company in Fredericton. Accompanying the portrait is the original parallel rule seen in the portrait, the Chestnut family bibles, marriage certificate of Robert Chestnut to Margaret Anthony, certificates of Robert Chestnut, and a loan document certifying the portrait as family property while displayed at the Chestnut Hardware Company. Le Capitaine s’installa au Nouveau-Brunswick dans les années 1830, après de nombreuses années en mer. Il tient une règle parallèle et un compas et regarde la carte de la baie de Fundy que l’on peut voir à travers la fenêtre, au-dessus de son épaule gauche. Le Capitaine fit une brillante carrière de commerçant et fonda la quincaillerie Chestnut, ainsi que la Chestnut Canoe Company, à Fredericton. Articles suivants accompagnent le portrait: règle parallèle d’origine illustrée dans le portrait, bibles de la famille Chestnut, certificat de mariage de Robert Chestnut et Margaret Anthony, certificats de Robert Chestnut et document attestant que la famille Chestnut était propriétaire de ce portrait pendant qu’il était accroché dans la quincaillerie Chestnut.
