Signed Will Hicok Low (American,1853 -1932). 'Young French Girl'. Oil painting on canvas, signed and dated 1901, lower right. Canvas stamped verso, 'P. Folinet Fils Lefebrve Paris'.Various marks and labels to back of stretcher and frame, including an early label noting lawrence park, bronxville, ny's art colony.

Will Hicok Low, born in albany, new york in 1853 ,was a leading muralist and figurative painter who explored both barbizon landscapes and colorful victorian style. He was the second husband of artist Mary MacMonnies Low, and a friend of writer Robert Louis Stevenson. He studied with academic painter Jean-Leon Gerome and Carolus-Duran from 1872-1877 in paris.

As a member of the national academy of design, new york city, he was elected an associate in 1888, and an academician in 1890. He exhibited at the national academy for sixty years. Low was also well respected as a muralist with commissions that included the waldorf astoria. Will Low was one of bronxville, n.y.'s earliest residents of lawrence park, a community of artists, arriving in 1897. Will studied many art forms, but excelled as a muralist. Notable among his many accomplishments were the thirty-six twelve-foot high panels for the rotunda of the new york state education building in albany, which he painted in his bronxville studio between 1913 and 1918. He finished his last painting, a mural donated to the bronxville school, only a few hours before his death. His works are held in numerous museums including the the smithsonian, the metropolitan museum of art, the brooklyn museum, the high museum of art, among others.
Canvas - 35" high x 16" wide. Framed in antique giltwood moulding, 42 1/2" high x 23" wide.
