Description
WPA Era portrait. Oil on canvas 27 x 22 in. Born in Los Altos, CA on June 17, 1895 of Irish parents. Following graduation from Sacred Heart High School in San Francisco, Gerrity studied briefly at the CSFA. During the 1920s and 1930s he taught in his studios in San Francisco and Berkeley and later at CSFA and UC Extension. In the 1930s he worked with Lucien Labaudt on several projects and designed sets for various theatre groups, lectured locally, and served as art critic for the San Francisco Call-Bulletin. A lifelong resident of the San Francisco Bay area, he died on Feb. 27, 1980 in Walnut Creek. Using a colorful palette, he worked in oil, watercolor, and gouache. His portraits, still lifes, landscapes, and figures are executed in a bold, modern style reminiscent of Cézanne aSource: Edan Hughes, \"Artists in California, 1786-1940\"Interview with the artist or his/her family; Who\'s Who in American Art 1940; Art of Treasure Island.
