Item Details
Description
English school, 19th century oil on board impressionist coastal landscape, depicting a sunset sky over a shoreline with two moored boats. Signed HS lower right, possibly Harry Gordon Shields (United Kingdom, 1859-1935) or, less likely, Henry Sandham (Canadian, 1842-1910). Painting has later matting and frame, but retains old backing paper with paper label en verso for "F. King & Sons, Mortimer Art Gallery, Regent Street, London (est. 1870), with additional label with printed name Earls Court Limited, and handwritten name and address of Miss Elizabeth Price, 25 the Vauxhall, Nashville, Tenn. and "London 1896". "London" also written across the backing paper in charcoal or oil pastel, with later inscription reading "artist thought to be Henry Sandham of Dover." 8" H x 12 1/4" W panel, 17 1/2" H x 21 1/2" W frame exterior. Note: Miss Elizabeth Price operated a Music School out of The Vauxhall, an apartment building on Broad Street in Nashville for a period of years between 1923 and 1941, when the building was demolished. The artist Willie Betty Newman had an art studio in the same building. Provenance: found in a Nashville estate sale.
Condition
Painting appears to have been recently framed with matting glued over the old frame, old acidic framing materials retained. Some losses to entire perimeter of painting from where old mat was glued to the edges of the painting. Darkened varnish layer. A few miniscule flakes and losses to paint.
