JEFFERSON, Thomas Document signed regarding the "tribute paid to the memory of Benjamin Franklin".Philadelphia: 2 March 1791. Printed broadside (380 x 230 mm) signed in ink "Th. Jefferson" as Secretary of State, countersigned in print by George Washington (President), John Adams (Vice President), and Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg (Speaker of the House of Representatives). Condition: folds, one short marginal tear, short closed tear in printed area affecting two words, faint stain below signature. RARE. JEFFERSON SIGNS A RESOLUTION IN MEMORY OF BENJAMIN FRANKLIN. Upon the death of Franklin in April of 1790, President Washington put forth the following request to have Franklin acknowledged by the National Assembly of France. The order is here resolved by the Senate and the House of Representatives. The document reads: "Resolved ... That the President of the United States be requested to communicate to the National Assembly of France the peculiar sensibility of Congress to the tribute paid to the memory of Benjamin Franklin by the enlightened and free representatives of a great nation ...
